San Donato Hat and Mitts

The Basilica of Santa Maria e San Donato on the Venetian island of Murano has a remarkable 12th Century mosaic floor at the centre of which is a circular motif representing the Ascension of Christ surrounded by angels.  The geometric designs are typical of the Cosmatesque floors of the time. This pattern was my inspiration for the San Donato hat and mitts, using Jamieson’s of Shetland Spindrift. This yarn comes in a multitude of colours and is ideal for stranded colourwork and steeking – the mitts use a small steek to create the thumbhole, so these are an ideal project for learning how to create a steek.  See my blog post here for more details.
